(HAMPTON, Va.)  Top seeds Fayetteville State and Elizabeth City State both advanced to Saturday's semifinals of the 2008 CIAA Volleyball Championships after posting 3-0 records during Friday's pool play at the Boo Williams Sportsplex. They were the only unbeaten teams after the tournament's first day.

Both teams join Saint Augustine's and Bowie State in the semifinals. Elizabeth City State plays Bowie State at 5 p.m. followed by Saint Augustine's versus Fayetteville State at 7 p.m. on Saturday.

The top two teams in each pool qualified for the semifinals. Elizabeth City State (28-9 overall) was first and Saint Augustine's (15-15) placed second in Pool A while defending CIAA champion Fayetteville State finished ahead of Bowie State (16-15) in Pool B. Elizabeth City State was the Eastern Division champion and Fayetteville State (21-13) captured the Western Division crown in the CIAA during the regular season.

Fayetteville State won all but one set and Elizabeth City State won every set in three matches on Friday. Fayetteville State beat Virginia Union 3-0 (25-8, 25-16, 25-19), Livingstone 3-0 (25-18, 25-20, 25-19) and Bowie State 3-1 (25-17, 25-14, 22-25, 25-17) while Elizabeth City State downed Johnson C. Smith 3-0 (25-12, 25-12, 25-12), Virginia State 3-0 (25-13, 25-10, 25-14) and Saint Augustine's 3-0 (25-16, 25-22, 25-17).

Chekimbrell Jefferson led Fayetteville State with 46 kills in three matches. Elizabeth City State was led by Chelsea Amick with 35 kills in three matches. Jefferson was named CIAA player of the year for the second straight year and Amick was named CIAA rookie of the year while Linda Bell of Elizabeth City State was chosen CIAA coach of the year at the CIAA Volleyball Banquet on Thursday.

Saint Augustine's and Bowie State both posted 2-1 records to qualify for the semifinals. Saint Augustine's topped Virginia State 3-2 (25-21, 25-20, 12-25, 17-25, 15-9) and Johnson C. Smith 3-1 (25-23, 26-24, 22-25, 25-20), and Bowie State defeated Livingstone 3-1 (25-17, 25-20, 24-26, 26-24) and Virginia Union 3-0 (25-19, 26-24, 25-20).

Four teams were eliminated in the eight-team tournament on the first day including Johnson C. Smith, Livingstone, Virginia State and Virginia Union.

(HAMPTON, Va.)  The 2008 Lady Bulldogs volleyball season came to a close as the top seeded Lady Vikings of Elizabeth City State defeated Bowie State 3-0 in the CIAA Championship semifinals.  Elizabeth City State won by scores of 25-10, 25-16 and 15-14, wrapping up BSU's season at 16-16.

(HAMPTON, Va.)  Bowie State defeated Livingstone 3-1 (25-17, 25-20, 24-26, 26-24) and Virginia Union 3-0 (25-19, 26-24, 25-20) in Pool Play on day one of the CIAA Volleyball Championships.  However, BSU's Lady Bulldogs fell 3-1 (17-25, 14-25, 25-22 and 17-25)  to the Western Division's top seed Fayetteville State.  In spite of the loss, Bowie State advances to the semifinal round and will take on Elizabeth City State at 5 p.m. Saturday.

(HAMPTON, Va.)  The Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association is proud to announce the 2008 All-CIAA and All-CIAA Rookie Teams as selected by the CIAA Volleyball Coaches Association.  Seven Bowie State players, Alycia Williams-Chase (Baltimore, MD, Baltimore Polytechnic), Tamira Conner Rogers (Ft. Washington, MD, Oxon Hill), Bethany Sloat (Baltimore, MD, Western, Columbia Union College), Itumeleng Shadreck (Bostwana Africa, East Chapel Hill, North Carolina Central), Jasmine McNair (Germantown, MD, Seneca Valley)La Teasha Johnson (Arnold, MD, Antioch Christian School, Anne Arundel C.C.) and Breaun Garner (Beltsville, MD, Northwestern) were among those honored as members of the Second Team.  Johnson was also named to the CIAA All-Rookie Team as well.

 (LINCOLN UNIVERSITY, Pa.)  It didn't take long for Bowie State University to win its road match against Lincoln University of Pennsylvania (6-18).  In fact, it took just 59 minutes for BSU to capture a three set sweep, beating the Lady Lions 25-16, 25-17 and 25-9.
