What is an Athletic Trainer?
An athletic trainer is a highly certified and educated professional who specializes in the prevention, conditioning, and rehabilitation of injuries of athletes. A certified athletic trainer is an integral member who works in cooperation with other allied health care professionals in professional sports teams, collegiate teams, sports medicine clinics, secondary school teams and other heath care settings.
The Bowie State University Sports Medicine Department is in charge of 13 varsity intercollegiate sports. These sports include men’s basketball, football, indoor track and field, outdoor track and field, and cross-country. The women’s sports include basketball, tennis, softball, indoor track and field, outdoor track and field, cross country, volleyball and bowling.
The Bowie State University Sports Medicine Department not only provides the best sports medicine care for their athletes, but we also help educate, and offer internships to students who have a desire to become certified athletic trainers or work in other realms of the sports medicine profession.
Bowie State University Sports Medicine Department is led by head athletic trainer Seanta Cleveland, MAT, ATC, and assistant athletic trainer Ron Turner who work in conjunction with team physicians: Dr. Alex Kor, D.P.M., M.S., podiatrist, and Dr. Craig Bennett, M.D., orthopaedist.
