(BOWIE, Md.) The 2010 Bowie State University football schedule has been released for the CIAA Runner-Up Bulldogs. Bowie State closed out last season with a 6-5 overall record and 5-2 record in the CIAA.
BSU will open the season on
Saturday, August 28th against
Seton Hill University at 3:00 pm at Offutt Field (Greensburg, PA). This will mark the first ever meeting between the Griffins and Bulldogs. Seton Hill is a member of the West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, finished the 2009 season with a 1-10 overall record (0-8 WVIAC).
Following the Seton Hill game, Bowie State will make a short road trip over to Baltimore (MD) to tangle with the Bears of
Morgan State University on
Saturday, September 4th at 6:00 pm at Hughes Stadium. The Bears and Bulldogs last met on the gridiron in 2006 with Morgan State edging Bowie State 28-20. Morgan State, a member of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC), finished fourth in the conference with a 4-4 record in 2009 and 6-5 overall record. The Morgan State / Bowie State series is tied 4-4-1.
Bowie State will stay on the road in week three, opening conference play at Fayetteville (NC) State University on Saturday, September 11th against the Broncos at 6:00 pm. Fayetteville State defeated Bowie State twice in 2009, beating the Bulldogs 30-20 at Bowie State (9/12) and came back to capture the conference championship game (11/7) by the score of 21-10. Fayetteville State (8-4 overall / 6-1 CIAA), holds a 14-11-1 series advantage over BSU's Bulldogs.
The BSU Bulldogs play their fourth straight road game of the season, traveling to
Livingstone College – Saturday, September 18 to face the Blue Bears in Alumni Stadium (Salisbury, NC) at 6:00 pm. Livingstone finished last in the CIAA Western Division in 2009, ending the year with a 0-10 overall record (0-7 in the CIAA). Bowie State crushed Livingstone last season, pounding the Blue Bears 51-0 at BSU. Livingstone leads the series 16-9 against the Bulldogs.
Bowie State makes their home debut on
Saturday, September 25th versus the
Virginia Union University Panthers in Bulldogs Stadium at 1:00 pm. This will mark the 25th overall meeting between the two institutions with Virginia Union leading the series 15-8-1. Virginia Union blocked a late game field goal attempt in 2009 and went on to defeat Bowie State 17-16 before a national television audience. Virginia Union finished third in the CIAA East with a record of 5-2 (6-4 overall).
Virginia State University comes to town on
Saturday, October 2nd for a 1:00 pm conference clash against the Bulldogs. Virginia State's Trojans held on to beat the Bulldogs 14-12 in the 2009 regular season finale at Rogers Stadium. Virginia State ended the year with a 6-4 overall record (4-3 CIAA) and lead the series with a 14-7 record.
Week seven will take the Bowie State Bulldogs to a neutral site (Roanoke, VA) to face the
Saint Paul's College Tigers on
Saturday, October 9th. The exact site and time of this game has yet to be determined. Saint Paul's ended the 2009 campaign fifth in the CIAA Eastern Division with a 4-5 overall record and 3-4 in the CIAA. Bowie State leads the series 9-4 and has won the last five in a row against the Tigers, including a 14-0 shutout last season.
Bowie State University welcomes
Lincoln University of Pennsylvania to Bulldogs Stadium on
Saturday, October 16th at 1:00 pm for Homecoming 2010. The BSU Bulldogs and Lincoln Lions have met only twice in the history of both programs. Bowie State won the inaugural meeting (10/4/2008), defeating Lincoln 28-2 at Bowie and tamed the Lions 51-20 on Lincoln's home field (10/3/2009). Lincoln (Pa.) ended last season with a 3-7 overall mark.
The Bulldogs host the Vikings of
Elizabeth City State University in their final home game of the season on
Saturday, October 23rd at 1:00 pm in Bulldogs Stadium. Bowie State made one of the best comebacks in school history, stunning the ECSU Vikings 37-33. Elizabeth City State wrapped up the year second in the CIAA East and a 7-4 overall record. This years meeting will be the 27th overall meeting between the Bulldogs and Vikings with the series being tied 13-13.
After an open week, Bowie State closes out the 2010 regular season with its first trip and first ever meeting against
Chowan University at Garrison Stadium (Murfreesboro, NC) –
Saturday, November 6 at 12 noon. Chowan joined the CIAA in 2009 and ended their regular season fifth in the western division with a 2-8 overall record and 2-5 mark in the conference.
