(PETERSBURG, Va.) Shaw University won the CIAA women’s tennis title by one point over host Virginia State University Saturday afternoon on the VSU Tennis Courts. Both schools had tallied 50 team points
Jessica Bond Receives Singles Award
with the number four singles position set to determine the champion.  BSU senior Jessica Bond (Silver Spring, MD, John F. Kennedy / Emerson Preparatory School) defeated Lakevia Ingram of Virginia State in straights sets 6-4 and 6-3 to capture the No. 5 Singles title.

Xania Steele (Shaw) defeated Tamilia Hicks (VSU) in three sets to give Shaw 58 team points and the CIAA crown. Virginia State finished second with 57 team points. Bowie State had an impressive showing with 51 team points for third place. 

Johnson C. Smith University and Elizabeth City State University tied for fourth with 43 points. CIAA Player of the Year Cameron Chatman (JCSU) was also named Tournament MVP after defeating Ines Nieves (6-1, 6-1) at the number one singles position. 

Fayetteville State University finished sixth with 42 team points, Saint Augustine’s College was seventh with 15 points, and Saint Paul’s College had 10 team points for eighth place.

Lolia Kienka (Shaw) def. Kristan Tapassi (Fayetteville State) – (6-1, 6-0)

Evan Okafor (Shaw) def. Kendra Plummer (Virginia State) – (6-1, 6-1)

Singles flight No. 4 -- Championships
Xania Steele (Shaw) def. Tamilia Hicks (Virginia State) – (6-4, 4-6, 6-4)

Singles flight No. 5 -- Championship
Jessica Bond (Bowie State) def. Lakevia Ingram (Virginia State) – (6-4, 6-3)

Singles flight No. 6 -- Championships
Ashley Foster (Virginia State) def. Phyllis King (Elizabeth City State) – (6-0, 6-1)

Doubles Flight No. 1 -- Championship
Lolia Kienka and Fernanda Silva (Shaw) def. Cameron Chatman and Jae Hargett (Johnson C. Smith) – (8-3)

(PETERSBURG, Va.) The Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association kicked off the first day of the Women’s Tennis Championships today from the Virginia State Tennis Complex. Bowie State University's Lady Bulldogs defeated Elizabeth City State University 5-3 and advance to face Shaw - Friday (April 16) in semifinal action.  The conference has elected to alter the format of this year’s championships. Instead of individual seeding by flight, teams will face each other in a single elimination, first to five match points tournament.

MATCH RESULTS

(BOWIE, Md.)  St. Mary's College of Maryland defeated Bowie State 7-2 in non-conference women's tennis action.  The loss puts the Lady Bulldogs overall record at 11-4 on the year.  Bowie State will wrap up conference play Thursday (April 1) hosting Virginia State University at 5 p.m.

(PETERSBURG, Va.)  Day two of the CIAA Tennis Championships proved to be better for the Bowie State Lady Bulldogs.  BSU went a perfect 6-0 in singles and 2-1 in doubles through the quarterfinal round.
