DAY THREE RESULTS

(PETERSBURG, Va.) The finals match-ups are set in the women's singles competition for the 2009 CIAA Tennis Championships. Six schools will be represented in the singles’ finals on Saturday afternoon at the VSU Tennis Courts on the campus of Virginia State University.

CIAA Women's Player of the Year and freshman phenom Cameron Chatman (Johnson C. Smith) has advanced to the championship match at the number one singles spot to face last year’s POY Ines Nieves (FSU). Chatman beat Christina McLean of Elizabeth City State (6-0, 6-0) and Nieves defeated Danielle Fields (Suitland, MD, Suitland) 6-3, 6-2 to earn their title shot.

Fayetteville State will be also represented by Kristan Tapassi in the number two singles’ finals against CIAA Rookie of the Year Lolia Kienka of Shaw University. Evan Okafor will give Shaw an opportunity to win another six team points at the number three singles slot as she squares off against Kendra Plummer of Virginia State.

The number four singles finals will also be a Shaw-Virginia State match-up with Xania Steele (Shaw) taking on Tamilia Hicks (VSU). Steele topped Melissa Shuler (JCSU) in two tie breaker sets (7-6, 7-6) and Hicks defeated Chelyce Fields (Suitland, MD, Suitland) to set up the championship match. 

Jessica Bond (Silver Spring, MD, John F. Kennedy / Emerson Preparatory School)  is the lone Lady Bulldog in a singles’ final against Lakevia Ingram (VSU) for the number five singles title. Ashley Foster is the third Lady Trojan in a final; Foster faces Phyllis King of Elizabeth City State in the sixth and final singles championship.

The championship matches will begin on Saturday morning on the campus of Virginia State University. A complete listing:

(PETERSBURG, Va.) The Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association kicked off the first day of the Women’s Tennis Championships today from the Virginia State Tennis Complex. Bowie State University's Lady Bulldogs defeated Elizabeth City State University 5-3 and advance to face Shaw - Friday (April 16) in semifinal action.  The conference has elected to alter the format of this year’s championships. Instead of individual seeding by flight, teams will face each other in a single elimination, first to five match points tournament.

MATCH RESULTS

(BOWIE, Md.)  St. Mary's College of Maryland defeated Bowie State 7-2 in non-conference women's tennis action.  The loss puts the Lady Bulldogs overall record at 11-4 on the year.  Bowie State will wrap up conference play Thursday (April 1) hosting Virginia State University at 5 p.m.

FINAL RESULTS

(PETERSBURG, Va.)  Bowie State University senior Jessica Bond (Silver Spring, MD, John F. Kennedy / Emerson Preparatory School) defeated Lakevia Ingram of Virginia State in straights sets 6-4 and 6-3 to capture the No. 5 Singles title.  Lady Bulldogs place third overall at CIAA Spring Sports Championships.

DAY TWO RESULTS

(PETERSBURG, Va.)  Day two of the CIAA Tennis Championships proved to be better for the Bowie State Lady Bulldogs.  BSU went a perfect 6-0 in singles and 2-1 in doubles through the quarterfinal round.
