Bowie State Defeats Fayetteville State 4-1

(PETERSBURG, Va.) Bowie State University (23-6) advances to Saturday's (4/18) CIAA Softball Championship game after defeating Fayetteville State University 4-1 in the winner's bracket semifinal game.

Junior Kelley Alexander (Damascus, Md., Covenant Life, Montgomery College) and freshman Shanae Smoot (Bel Alton, Md., LaPlata) accounted for two hits each to lead BSU's Lady Bulldogs. Alexander was also directly responsible two RBI. Junior pitcher Faline Brown (Inwood, W.Va., Hagerstown C.C.) picked up her 10th win of the season and was credited with five assists.

Fayetteville State (24-23) was led by Dominique Mills, going 2-for-3 on the afternoon. Tracy Brighter (10-6) suffered the loss, allowing four hits but struck out four before being relieved in the fifth inning.

FSU's Lady Broncos fall into the loser's bracket and will face host Virginia State University at 5:30 later this afternoon.

(GLEN BURNIE, Md.) Division I Coppin State University took two from Bowie State University, defeating the Lady Bulldogs 4-1 and 7-2. Coppin State, a member of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) improves its record to 7-2, while the Bowie State record dips to 2-4 overall. Bowie State returns to action tomorrow (March 10) in another non-conference game at Goldey-Beacom College.

(MYRTLE BEACH, S.C.) The three-peat CIAA Champion Lady Bulldogs softball team opened their 2010 campaign with a two-game sweep of Mary Baldwin College (Staunton, Va.). Bowie State dominated the Fighting Squirrels by scores of 8-0 and 11-1 on opening day of the Fastpitch Dreams Spring Classic.

(BOWIE, Md.)  Bowie State University head softball coach Darrell Toney is proud to announce the signing of six outstanding student-athletes to the Lady Bulldogs program.  The class includes Adria Lewis (Cumberland, Maryland), Megan Peomroy (Thurmont, Maryland), Haley Snyder (Pennsauken, New Jersey), Shelby Snyder, (Pennsauken, New Jersey), Renelle Traylor (Hayward, California) and Cherokee Williams (Upper Marlboro, Maryland).

(INDIANAPOLIS, IN)  Bowie State University's Tiffany Toney (Abilene, TX, Abilene Cooper, The University of Oklahoma ) named NCAA Division II Woman of the Year.  Toney, the three-time CIAA Softball Player of the Year (2007-2009), is one of 132 NCAA female student-athletes selected.
