BOWIE STATE PICKS UP BIG 72-68 WIN OVER FAYETTEVILLE STATE
BOX SCORE

(FAYETTEVILLE, N.C.) Bowie State University’s Bulldogs overcame an eight point deficit midway through the second half and came away with a key 72-68 conference win over previously unbeaten Fayetteville State University. The victory improves Bowie State to 3-1 overall (1-1 CIAA).

Both teams had a conservative, low-scoring first half with Fayetteville State edging out the Bulldogs 25-23 going into the locker room. The Bulldogs went inside for the majority of their scoring. In the opening period, BSU outscored the Broncos 12-to-4 in the paint.

The game hung in the balance with FSU maintaining a slight advantage for most of the second half. However with 2:10 remaining, Jason Thompson stroked a three-pointer to tie it up at 62. Unfortunately for Fayetteville State, BSU’s Andrew Engel (Glen Burnie, MD, Old Mill, Colby C.C.) responded on the other end with a three of his own. Charles Richardson (Suitland, MD, Suitland, Montgomery - Takoma Park C.C.) and Corey Stevens (Glenarden, MD, Good Counsel) hit a pair of free throws each to push Bowie State’s lead to 69-62 and the Bulldogs would never trail again.

Fayetteville State (3-1 /1-1 CIAA) did manage to pull within two in closing seconds, but solid free throw shooting down the stretch secured the win for Bowie. The Bulldogs had a better day shooting from the field and the long ball. BSU shot 48.1% (25-of-52) from the floor and 53.3% (8-of-15) from the arc. FSU connected on 22 of their 29 free throws (75.9%), but shot 32.3% (21-of-65) overall on the night.

Bowie State had four players finish with double digit point totals. Engel scored a game and BSU career-high 20 points, while Armond Hill (Silver Spring, MD, Springbrook, Montgomery - Rockville C.C.) produced a double-double of 15 points and a BSU career-high 11 rebounds for the Bulldogs. Stevens scored a career-high 15 points for the Bulldogs and Richardson totaled 12 points.

Ariel Robinson scored a team-high 15 points, but he was only on target for four of his 20 field goal attempts. Thompson contributed with 13 points and six rebounds and James Wooten rounded out Fayetteville State’s top scorers with 11 points and five boards.

BSU’s Bulldogs return to the hardwood – Tuesday, November 25th, traveling to St. Paul’s College. Bowie State and St. Paul’s will get underway at 7:30 p.m. in SPC’s Taylor-Whitehead Gymnasium.
